[Financial News] Shinhan Investment & Securities is accelerating efforts to build a "two-way global investment platform" that connects Korean investors with overseas investments and overseas investors with investments in Korea.
Shinhan Investment & Securities said on the 15th that CEO Lee Sun-hoon had visited Japan, Hong Kong and Vietnam to discuss expanding cooperation with major local financial institutions and capital-market organizations.
During the overseas visits, Lee explored various business opportunities in each country, including capital-market exchanges, investor attraction and the foreign-investor omnibus account service, as well as the wealth management (WM) business.
In Tokyo, Japan, he met with the management of Mizuho Securities and Rakuten Securities to discuss ways to expand their businesses by leveraging the foundations and strengths of both companies. In particular, Shinhan Investment & Securities agreed with Mizuho Securities to cooperate in attracting global investors to Korean and Japanese companies by utilizing Shinhan Investment & Securities' research capabilities.
One key initiative is the Mizuho Investment Conference, Japan's largest conference for global institutional investors. The two companies plan to use the event to introduce outstanding companies from Korea and Japan to institutional investors in both countries and around the world, while creating concrete investment opportunities.
In Hong Kong, Shinhan Investment & Securities signed a memorandum of understanding with CICC International to expand its foreign-investor omnibus account service and WM business.
The plan is to leverage the global networks and financial-service capabilities of both companies to improve foreign investors' access to Korea's capital market and broaden cooperation in wealth management.
In Vietnam, Lee met with senior officials from the State Securities Commission of Vietnam (SSC) and Vietnam Exchange (VNX) to discuss expanding capital-market cooperation and investor exchanges between the two countries.
He met with SSC Vice Chairwoman Le Thi Viet Nga and VNX Vice President Dang Thai Anh Trang, among others, to explore ways to strengthen links between the two markets and expand reciprocal investment opportunities, including in investment banking.
The central significance of these moves is that Shinhan Investment & Securities' global business strategy is expanding from "overseas investment by Korean investors" to "investment in Korea by overseas investors."
Shinhan Investment & Securities has already pursued cooperation with 24X National Exchange in the United States and GF Securities in Hong Kong on foreign-investor omnibus account services to connect global investment clients with Korea's stock market. By expanding its cooperation network to Japan and Vietnam, the company aims to combine the investor bases of overseas financial institutions with Shinhan Investment & Securities' WM, investment banking and research capabilities.
Given the significant influence of foreign investors in Korea's stock market, expanding networks with global financial institutions means more than simply securing overseas sales channels. It also creates a route for bringing overseas capital into Korea's capital market.
If foreign-investor omnibus accounts and research and investor-relations (IR) services for global institutional investors become more active, Korean companies could also gain broader access to overseas investors.
Lee said, "This visit to the three countries was aimed at expanding our global business based on various agendas, including foreign-investor omnibus accounts, WM and capital-market exchanges." He added, "We will strengthen our competitiveness as a two-way global financial platform that connects not only Korean investors with overseas investments but also overseas investors with investments in Korea."
