[Financial News] COOCON, a business data platform company, announced on the 15th that it had connected Kakao Pay with Seoul Pay+ to expand QR payment infrastructure to domestic payment services.
Through the integration, Kakao Pay users can now make QR payments with Kakao Pay Money at Seoul Pay+ merchants. Kakao Pay is the first domestic payment provider to integrate with Seoul Pay+ merchants. As one of Korea’s leading easy-payment services, Kakao Pay has approximately 43 million cumulative subscribers. The integration enables payments at approximately 270,000 Seoul Pay+ merchants.
Kakao Pay users can pay at Seoul Pay+ merchants through the Kakao Pay home screen in KakaoTalk or the Kakao Pay app, without installing a separate app. Seoul Pay+ merchants can also expand the payment options offered to customers without additional system investment by using their existing QR infrastructure.
The integration is part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s 2025 project to open standard Seoul QR payments to domestic payment providers. At the time, the Seoul Metropolitan Government signed business agreements with domestic payment providers, including Kakao Pay, and pursued the opening of its payment network so that various payment apps could be used at Seoul Pay+ merchants. Following the system development process, Kakao Pay became the first domestic payment provider to complete its integration with Seoul Pay+ and launch commercial services.
As the payment and settlement operator selected by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, COOCON operates payment infrastructure connecting Seoul Pay+ with domestic and international easy-payment services. It previously integrated global payment services such as UnionPay, WeChat Pay and Alipay+ with Seoul Pay+, improving payment convenience for foreign tourists. With the Kakao Pay integration, COOCON has expanded its coverage to domestic payment services.
COOCON is also steadily expanding its offline payment coverage. It is building QR merchant networks based on local currencies and increasing the number of directly affiliated franchise merchants. As its offline merchant network grows, the benefits of linking it with domestic and international easy-payment services are expected to increase further. COOCON also plans to accelerate its expansion into Asian markets by establishing a Singapore subsidiary, securing global partners and diversifying its service channels.
Kim Jong-hyun, CEO of COOCON, said, "This integration with Kakao Pay is significant because COOCON’s QR payment infrastructure, which has led the way in cross-border payments, has expanded to domestic payment services." He added, "Building on the payment infrastructure established in Korea, we will actively pursue overseas markets, including Asia, and grow into a global payment company."
