[Financial News] Despite the sharp drop in U.S. semiconductor stocks the previous day, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix avoided a steep decline early in trading on the 15th.
On the KOSPI, Samsung Electronics was trading at 250,000 won as of 9:30 a.m., up 0.40% from the previous trading day. SK hynix was trading at 1,709,000 won, up 0.71% from the previous session.
Amid concerns over a slowdown in the pace of artificial intelligence (AI) development, rising international oil prices and a sharp increase in U.S. Treasury yields, all three major indexes on the U.S. New York stock market fell on the 14th (local time), while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) plunged 5.86%.
NVIDIA (-3.36%), Micron Technology (-5.25%), Broadcom (-4.77%), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) (-4.40%) and Intel (-5.59%) all declined, while SK hynix’s American depositary receipts (ADRs) also fell 7.60%.
However, major South Korean semiconductor stocks had already suffered steep declines the previous day, prompting signs of bargain hunting.
Han Ji-young, a researcher at KIWOOM Securities, explained, "Domestic and overseas semiconductor stocks are currently facing another test because of concerns about a slowdown in AI momentum. The market is not questioning the growth potential of the AI industry itself, but with noise entering the narrative and uncertainty surrounding the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in September, sensitivity to negative factors appears to have increased again."
