'On the Hot Seat' Justice Minister Nominee Kim Seung-won: "I Apologize for Causing Concern to the Public"

[Financial News] Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won said regarding the various allegations surrounding him, "I apologize for causing concern to the public." He emphasized that he would thoroughly explain the parts of the allegations that differ from the facts while proceeding without setbacks with criminal justice reform centered on separating investigations and prosecutions.
In his opening remarks at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea confirmation hearing on the 15th, nominee Kim said, "While preparing for the hearing, I reflected on the path I have taken and my shortcomings," adding, "I apologize for causing concern to the public over allegations related to me."
He continued, "I will answer the committee members' questions sincerely and thoroughly explain the parts that differ from the facts."
Nominee Kim also emphasized the establishment of a "responsible criminal justice system" that day. He declared, "I will thoroughly prepare the organization, personnel and budget of the Public Prosecution Office and reflect the purpose of separating investigations and prosecutions in its organizational structure and operations," adding, "I will ensure that the Public Prosecution Office protects human rights while fulfilling its responsibilities for indictments and maintaining prosecutions."
He continued, "In cooperation with relevant ministries, we will prevent illegal and inadequate investigations, such as covering up cases or omitting evidence, and resolve delays in processing cases," adding, "We will also correct the political use of investigative information."
At that day's hearing, the focus is expected to be on examining various allegations that emerged after nominee Kim's appointment, including the so-called 'new drug lobbying,' 'collusion with warrant judges' and 'special treatment for his family.'
Nominee Kim has denied allegations that he solicited approval for a new drug clinical trial, saying that it involved the "delivery of a petition for a public-interest purpose." The opposition, however, is preparing an offensive, arguing based on evidence such as recordings of conversations with a broker that he is unqualified to serve as Minister of Justice.
