Samsung Electronics Successfully Uses 6G Network to Monitor Crowd Density in Real Time

Samsung Electronics and Verizon said on the 15th that they had used Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology at an event crowded with people to detect their movements and crowd density, analyze the collected information in real time using AI, and visualize the crowd density as a heat map.

[Financial News] Samsung Electronics has successfully used a core sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications technology in partnership with U.S. carrier Verizon to monitor crowd density in real time at a large event venue. Because communications infrastructure can function like a sensor and detect crowd movements without separate equipment, the technology is expected to be used for safety management at major sporting events, concerts, and other venues.
Samsung Electronics said on the 15th that it had become the first company in the industry to successfully conduct a real-world demonstration of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), a core 6G technology, with Verizon using a virtualized network solution.
In July, Samsung Electronics applied its virtualized network solution and AI-based ISAC technology in an actual event environment at a global sporting event held in Texas.
ISAC is a core 6G technology that uses communications equipment as high-precision sensors. It analyzes reflected wireless signals collected by base stations in existing communications infrastructure to determine the location, speed, and direction of movement of people and objects.
A key feature is that it does not require separate sensing equipment. The technology can also be used in blind spots or dark environments where conventional sensing technologies are difficult to apply, expanding its potential applications to safety and security, transportation, and industrial sites.
In the demonstration, ISAC detected people’s movements and crowd density at an event venue filled with people. The companies also successfully used AI to analyze the collected information in real time and visualize the level of crowding as a heat map.
This technology can be used to monitor congestion in real time at venues that attract large crowds, such as sporting events and concerts. Organizers can quickly identify areas with high crowd density, respond to safety incidents, and guide visitors toward less crowded amenities and routes.
The demonstration used Samsung Electronics’ latest AI-RAN solution, Network in a Server (NIS). NIS is an edge AI platform that implements AI, base stations, core networks, and other network functions in software while integrating high-performance computing resources such as CPUs and GPUs into a single platform.
Seol Ji-yoon, executive vice president and head of the Product Strategy Team in Samsung Electronics’ Network Business Division, said, "Samsung Electronics and Verizon have broken away from the 150-year-old framework that communications must be centered on hardware and have successfully led a paradigm shift toward next-generation software-based networks. We will open new horizons in the era that AI and 6G will bring, drawing on our advanced technological capabilities."
