U.S. Space Force "Officially Confirms Deployment of Space Weapons in Orbit"... Militarization of Space Begins in Earnest

[Financial News] The United States Space Force Command has officially confirmed that the United States has deployed weapons capable of attacking and defending the ground and satellites into orbit. This marks the first time the United States has officially acknowledged the deployment of space weapons in outer space.
On the 14th (local time), a spokesperson for the United States Space Force Command stated in a released statement that "the United States possesses orbital 'space control' weapons capable of protecting joint forces from attacks by hostile nations." While the spokesperson did not disclose specific weapon systems, they explained that "space control involves missions to neutralize enemy capabilities and control the space domain using both physical and non-physical means, and can be utilized for both offensive and defensive purposes."
This announcement stems from the assessment that China and Russia, the United States' two major geographical adversaries, are posing a threat in outer space. According to the U.S. Space Force, China is developing and operating space and anti-space attack capabilities as part of its military modernization strategy, while Russia views space as a primary battlefield and considers space hegemony a decisive factor determining the outcome of future conflicts.
Attempts to militarize space have continued since the space race began with the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957. In the past, the deployment of nuclear weapons in space was the greatest concern, but major powers signed the Outer Space Treaty in 1967 to ban the deployment of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in orbit.
However, even after the treaty was signed, the United States, Russia, China, and India have continuously explored ways to neutralize each other's satellites, which are critical to military communications, surveillance, and navigation. With the U.S. Space Force's official announcement, the arms race among major powers over the deployment of space weapons in orbit is expected to intensify further.
