【Hanoi, Vietnam—Correspondent Kim Jun-seok】U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla has formally established a local entity in Vietnam, taking its first step toward entering the Southeast Asian market.
According to VnExpress and other local media outlets on the 14th, Tesla Motors Vietnam completed its corporate registration with Vietnam’s National Business Registration Portal on the 11th. The company is headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City and has registered capital of 77.6 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately 402.744 million won). Its primary registered business is the wholesale of automobiles and motor vehicles, while the wholesale of automobile parts and accessories is also included in its business objectives.
David John Feinstein, a senior director responsible for global market access and commercial operations, is expected to serve as the company’s legal representative. Feinstein previously served as the head of Tesla Korea.
The registered capital is largely a form of “legal capital” set by global companies to complete licensing and investment procedures when entering Vietnam. Therefore, the initial capital does not fully represent Tesla’s total investment or its long-term commitment to the business. Local media expect the company to continue expanding its operating funds through intercompany loans from headquarters, service agreements and phased capital increases as the business progresses.
Tesla has not yet announced a specific sales roadmap or business plan for the Vietnamese market. However, establishing a local entity is the foremost legal procedure required for import and distribution agreements and direct sales. The move is therefore viewed as preparatory work for a formal launch in the future.
Meanwhile, SpaceX, the private space company led by Elon Musk, established Starlink Services Vietnam last September with registered capital of 30 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately 155.7 million won). As a result, companies affiliated with Musk are expected to accelerate their push into the Vietnamese market.
