Yun Kun Young: "Lee Jae Myung Must Not Try to Defeat the Public... He Must Clear Away the Cancellation of Indictments and Second-Term Constitutional Amendment"

[Financial News] Yun Kun Young, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker from the non-Lee Jae Myung faction, offered candid advice to President Lee Jae Myung on the 14th, ahead of his press conference for the public, saying, "He must not try to defeat the public." He particularly stressed that recent controversial issues, including the cancellation of indictments and a constitutional amendment allowing a second term, "must be cleared away without leaving any residue."
Yun posted the remarks on social media that day, saying, "He must not lose momentum, but neither should he try to defeat the public." He continued, "The essence of the recent deterioration in public opinion is that the foundation of trust has collapsed," adding, "He must abandon any intention of embellishing or manipulating the president's sincerity. There is no other way but to look the public straight in the eye and convey that sincerity in the president's own words."
The remarks appear to have been prompted by President Lee's approval rating, which has declined for nine consecutive weeks. In a Realmeter survey of 2,515 people aged 18 or older nationwide conducted from the 7th to the 11th, 33.8% gave a positive assessment of Lee's performance as president, down 3.6 percentage points from the previous week. Approval was particularly low among men and women in their 20s, at 19.6% and 17.6%, respectively. Among people in their 30s, the positive assessment fell 2.8 percentage points from the previous week to 27%.
The reversal in party approval ratings between the ruling and opposition parties also appears to have played a role. In a Realmeter survey of 1,003 people aged 18 or older nationwide conducted over two days on the 10th and 11th, the Democratic Party of Korea recorded 36.1% and the People Power Party 42.1%. Among respondents in their 20s, support for the Democratic Party of Korea fell 18.8 percentage points from the previous week to 15%, while support for the People Power Party rose 21.2 percentage points to 61.5%. Among those in their 30s, the Democratic Party of Korea recorded 30.9% and the People Power Party 45.9%.
Yun said, "I hope he approaches this with the mindset that this is where we begin. There must not be a second Yoon Suk Yeol," adding, "It is still the early part of the five-year term. Even if he starts over now, there is more than enough time."
President Lee is expected to hold a press conference for the public around the 17th or 18th, after concluding the Korea-Central Asia Summit.
Both surveys were conducted using wireless automated response methods. The margin of error for the presidential job approval survey was ±2.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, with a response rate of 4.5%. The margin of error for the party approval survey was ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, with a response rate of 3.6%.
