Cell Biotech Confirms Mechanism by Which Two Patented Probiotic Strains Inhibit Liver Fat Accumulation

Cell Biotech announced on the 14th that its R&D Center and the World Institute of Kimchi confirmed through joint research the effects of a combination of the probiotic strains 'CBT-BR3' and 'CBT-LP3' on liver fat accumulation and fat production. The findings were published in the international academic journal 'Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology (JMB)'.
This study expands Cell Biotech's ongoing research on obesity and body fat metabolism into the field of fatty liver disease. The researchers first treated human liver cell (HepG2) models in which fat accumulation had been induced with the two probiotic strains. As a result, intracellular fat accumulation decreased in the group treated with the probiotic combination, and the expression of key proteins involved in fat production also decreased.
In the animal experiments, CBT-BR3 and CBT-LP3 were orally administered for six weeks to mice in which obesity had been induced with a high-fat diet. The researchers then analyzed body weight, body fat, liver and abdominal fat weights, blood lipids, and liver function indicators.
As a result, compared with the control group, body weight in the probiotic-treated group decreased by 10.8%, body fat by 16.4%, and abdominal fat by 41.7%. Liver fat weight decreased by 41.1%.
Lipid droplets in liver cells also decreased. While an average of 360 lipid droplets were observed in the control group, the number fell to 132 in the high-dose group, a reduction of 63.3%.
Changes were also observed in the expression of genes related to fat production. Expression of fat-production-related genes decreased by an average of 59.7%. The liver function indicators AST and ALT also decreased by 39% and 46.1%, respectively.
The CBT-LP3 strain used in the study is derived from kimchi, while CBT-BR3 is derived from newborns. Both strains hold patents related to obesity and metabolism and have been recognized as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are used in Cell Biotech's probiotic products, including 'DUOLAC The First Class' and 'Duolac Bioguard'.
"This study confirmed the potential of the combined CBT-LP3 and CBT-BR3 probiotics to affect liver fat production and accumulation and improve the metabolic environment," an official from Cell Biotech's R&D Center said. "We will continue to scientifically verify the potential of the microbiome in various areas of metabolic health, including obesity and fatty liver disease."
