Gangwon Technopark Holds Kickoff Briefing for AI Industry Support Project Based on Small Data Centers

【Financial News, Gangneung = Kim Ki-seop】Gangwon Technopark has launched a project to help local companies transition to AI by leveraging small data centers.
Gangwon Technopark held the Gangwon regional kickoff briefing for the 2026 AI Industry Growth Support Project Based on Small Data Centers at Lakai Sandpine in Gangneung from the 10th to the 11th. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), Gangwon State, and Gangneung, and organized by Gangwon Technopark and the Gangneung Science and Industry Promotion Agency. Representatives from participating organizations and companies shared the project’s direction and detailed implementation plans, and discussed ways to cooperate.
The project links AI computing resources at local universities and institutions with small AI data centers to support the development and field validation of AI services needed by regionally specialized industries. It is expected to promote the growth of local companies and the AI transformation of industry by developing AI services that reflect demand in digital healthcare, materials and manufacturing, and safety.
On the first day, speakers introduced directions for using AI in Gangwon’s specialized industries and strategies for connecting AI models to small data centers and implementing them as cloud services. Seven participating companies then presented their development and field-validation plans for each project, sharing schedules and difficulties.
On the second day, participants discussed ways for universities with GPU resources to share them with participating companies and institutions. They focused on establishing a practical cooperation framework by consulting on GPU allocation and usage procedures, the division of roles, and technical support based on the resources held by each institution and the development needs of each company.
Lee Ki-soo, director of the Gangwon Digital Innovation Center, said, "We will systematically support the development and field validation of services by linking AI computing resources, including GPUs, with regionally specialized industries." He added, "We will continue to turn the AI models developed into services and commercialize them to enhance the competitiveness of local AI companies."
