Gangwon Governor Woo Sang-ho Calls for “Urgent Democratic Party Support” Ahead of Next Year’s Gangneung By-Election

【Financial News Chuncheon = Reporter Kim Ki-seop】Woo Sang-ho, Governor of Gangwon State, requested active support from the Democratic Party of Korea regarding next April’s Gangneung mayoral by-election, saying, “To be honest, I am anxious.”
At an on-site Supreme Council meeting held that day in the meeting room of the Gangwon State chapter of the Democratic Party of Korea, Woo said, “We cannot assume that public sentiment in Gangneung is exactly the same as it was during the last election.”
He stated, “I believe Gangneung residents are closely watching what the Democratic Party of Korea will do for Gangneung,” adding, “Ahead of next April’s election, I hope the Democratic Party of Korea will give Gangneung special consideration.”
He then proposed to the party leadership, “If necessary, I hope the party will activate a relevant task force and give people hope that the Democratic Party of Korea can contribute to Gangneung’s change and development.”
In particular, Woo said, “Gangneung is a city facing many difficulties,” and requested, “Please identify, at the party level, ways to give consideration to Gangneung, including the relocation of public institutions.”
Woo also highlighted moves by major companies to invest in Gangwon State since the launch of the ninth popularly elected administration.
He explained that GS Group had decided to invest 30 trillion to 100 trillion won in the East Sea and was set to begin construction within this year, while major-company investments were also being discussed in concrete terms in Chuncheon, Wonju and Gangneung.
He said, “Major companies’ investments in Gangwon State are premised on hiring local talent and building a virtuous cycle ecosystem with small and medium-sized enterprises in the province,” adding, “Opening opportunities for young people in Gangwon to find jobs at major companies locally instead of moving to the Seoul metropolitan area marks the beginning of major change.”
He also forecast that five or six tourism development projects, with investments ranging from 500 billion won to trillions of won, are planned along the east coast and in mountainous areas, saying they could provide an opportunity for the tourism industry to take a major step forward.
Woo added, “Please support us so that we can demonstrate, as an achievement of the Democratic Party of Korea, that balanced regional development is contributing not only to change in Gangwon State but also to the development of the Republic of Korea,” and said, “I will do my utmost to give people confidence that Gangwon State has changed because the Democratic Party of Korea won the election.”
