President Lee Jae Myung: "The Separation of Investigative and Prosecutorial Powers Must Not Undermine Responses to Crimes Against Women and Others"

[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung stressed on the 14th, "Relevant ministries will carefully ensure that responses to crimes against women and adolescents do not falter even as investigative and prosecutorial powers are separated." His remarks are understood as signaling that the government intends to review its response system ahead of the launch of the Public Prosecution Office and the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency in October.
In a post uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, that day, President Lee wrote, "It has been four years since the Sindang Station stalking murder occurred," and made the remarks.
President Lee said, "I still remember the words, 'I am sorry we could not protect you,' left on the memorial wall at Exit 10 of Sindang Station." He added, "I deeply mourn the deceased and extend my condolences to the bereaved family and to all victims who continue to live in fear."
He continued, "Since the incident, we have revised the Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes and strengthened victim-protection measures. However, the reality remains that victims still have to leave their homes and workplaces and hide themselves." He stressed, "Not long ago, there was another tragedy in which a wife who had fled domestic violence was killed by her husband. When violence is repeated and warning signs emerge, the state must step in first."
President Lee stated, "We must not defer responsibility on the grounds that institutions are inadequate. We must first ensure that the institutions already in place function properly on the ground." He added, "Victims should not have to hide; perpetrators must be stopped. Rather than restricting victims’ daily lives, we must restrict the actions of dangerous perpetrators."
He also pledged, "The government will implement without disruption the Measures to Strengthen Responses to Stalking and Dating Violence announced in July. We will also accelerate the necessary institutional improvements so that the same tragedy does not recur." He added, "The state will fulfill its responsibility to create a safe society in which people do not fear stalking crimes at work, on their commutes, or anywhere in their daily lives."
