[Financial News] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) is beginning full-scale construction of Great Train eXpress (GTX) Line C (GTX-C) in the Seoul metropolitan area.
MOLIT announced on the 15th that construction would begin on the GTX-C private-investment project.
According to MOLIT, GTX-C is an 86.6-kilometer metropolitan express railway line that starts in Deokjeong-dong, Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, passes through central Seoul—including Cheongnyangni Station, Samseong Station and Yangjae Station—and connects to Suwon Station and Sangnoksu Station in Gyeonggi Province.
Once the line opens, travel time from Deokjeong Station to Samseong Station is expected to fall sharply from about 80 minutes to about 30 minutes. The journey from Suwon Station to Cheongnyangni Station is also projected to drop from about 75 minutes to about 30 minutes. MOLIT said the project could dramatically improve transportation conditions across the Seoul metropolitan area.
MOLIT has set up promotional centers at Suwon Station and Uijeongbu Station to inform residents that construction has begun and improve public understanding of the project. At the opening ceremony at Suwon Station, a real-scale model of a GTX-C train will be unveiled. About 100 people, including Kim Yong-seok, chair of the Metropolitan Area Wide Transportation Committee, construction officials and residents, are expected to attend.
The promotional center will operate at Suwon Station from the 16th to the 18th and at Uijeongbu Station from the 20th to the 22nd. It will feature exhibition and interactive spaces where visitors can view the train design and route information and take part in quizzes.
Kim said, "I am extremely pleased to be able to announce to the public the start of construction on Line C, which faced difficulties for many years." He added, "We will ensure quality and safety through thorough construction management and work to open the line on schedule."
