Nepal Flood Relief Workers to Receive Free Roaming Services as Three Telecom Operators Provide Emergency Support

[Financial News] Mobile roaming charges for relief workers dispatched to Nepal to assist with recovery from the massive floods will be fully waived. International calls from Korea to Nepal will also receive a 50% discount.
The Korea Telecommunications Operators Association (KTOA) announced on Aug. 14 that the telecommunications industry, including KT, SK Telecom, LG Uplus and major international-call operators, would reduce telecommunications charges to support flood recovery efforts in Nepal.
In the mobile telecommunications sector, roaming charges will be fully waived for dispatched personnel, including emergency relief teams, nongovernmental organization (NGO) workers and medical staff carrying out rescue and recovery operations at disaster sites in Nepal.
International calls made by residents of Korea to local numbers in Nepal will also receive a 50% discount. KT, LG Uplus, SK Broadband, SK telink and SEJONG NETWORKS are participating in the initiative.
Under the telecommunications fee reductions, relief workers deployed in Nepal will be able to maintain emergency communication networks without having to bear data or voice-call charges.
The fee reductions apply from Aug. 21 through Sept. 20. The telecommunications industry plans to adjust the support period flexibly depending on conditions in Nepal.
A telecommunications industry official said, "We hope the industry’s solidarity and support will provide practical assistance in quickly stabilizing the flood-affected areas of Nepal and helping those displaced by the disaster."
