[Financial News] Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO) announced on the 14th that it is partnering with Blizzard Entertainment to unveil commemorative medals, bullion medals, and intaglio prints to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of 'Diablo,' a globally popular game with over 130 million users worldwide.
First released in 1996, Diablo is a masterpiece that laid the foundation for the action RPG genre. In Korea, it led the revival of PC bang culture, establishing itself as a nostalgic game for the 40s and 50s generation and a representative action game for the 20s and 30s generation. Through this collaboration, KOMSCO plans to showcase a high-quality collection that combines the symbolism of the Diablo intellectual property (IP) with its cutting-edge manufacturing technology.
The products being released this time will be produced in limited quantities worldwide, including 500 gold medals (15.55g), 2,500 silver medals (31.1g), 10,000 bullion silver medals, and 500 each of intaglio prints in black and white and color. The commemorative silver medals feature KOMSCO's proprietary embossing technology, boasting a high degree of three-dimensionality and precision, while the intaglio prints incorporate portrait technology used in banknote production to artistically realize the Diablo 30th Anniversary key art with fine lines and dots.
Domestic sales will begin on the 14th of this month through the KOMSCO shopping mall and KakaoTalk Gift, with regular sales on a first-come, first-served basis for the commemorative and bullion medals and pre-orders for the intaglio prints. For overseas demand, pre-orders will begin on the same day via the global platform 'Coins Today'. The physical products are scheduled to be unveiled for the first time at the Blizzard Entertainment booth at 'Game eSports Seoul 2026 (GES 2026)', which will be held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul from September 18 to 20.
Recently, in the global currency and medal market, 'Pop Culture Coins,' which incorporate global pop culture IP beyond traditional historical figures or events, have established themselves as a new collecting trend. Major national mints overseas are also actively attracting a new base of collectors, including the MZ generation, by releasing limited-edition medals in collaboration with IPs that possess global fan bases, such as 'Star Wars,' 'DC,' and 'Harry Potter.'
"Diablo is an iconic work that has given unforgettable memories to generations of Korean gamers," said Sung Chang-hoon, president of KOMSCO. "I hope this collection, which combines KOMSCO's unrivaled manufacturing technology with a global game IP, will be a special collecting experience for fans both at home and abroad."
