North Gyeongsang Province Secures 179 Billion Won in National Funding for Disaster Prevention to Protect Residents’ Lives

【Financial News Andong=Kim Jang-wook】North Gyeongsang Province is making every effort to protect the lives and property of its residents.
North Gyeongsang Province has secured 179 billion won in national funding for its 2027 disaster-risk-area improvement projects. This is an increase of 13.8 billion won (8.4%) from the 165.2 billion won allocated in 2026.
Despite the contraction in national investment conditions for social overhead capital (SOC), the province made residents’ safety its top priority. It focused on securing national funding by explaining the urgency and necessity of the projects to central government ministries and the National Assembly.
Kim Sang-cheol, head of the Safety and Administration Office, noted, "In an era of unpredictable climate crises, when natural disasters such as localized torrential rains and extremely powerful typhoons are growing stronger by the day, proactively identifying and improving disaster-risk areas is the surest shield for protecting residents’ lives and property."
He emphasized, "Since this is a budget we secured with great difficulty, we will concentrate our administrative capabilities to ensure that the government budget proposal is finalized by the National Assembly and that the projects are carried out swiftly and without the slightest error at disaster-prevention sites."
The province will invest a total of 358 billion won in 142 disaster-prevention project districts in 2027, combining 179 billion won in national funding with 179 billion won in local funding.
By project, the allocations are 146 billion won for comprehensive improvement of 40 flood- and storm-damage-prone living areas; 173 billion won for improving 74 natural-disaster-risk areas; 9.4 billion won for improving 12 disaster-risk reservoirs; and 29.6 billion won for improving 16 areas at risk of collapse on steep slopes.
Twenty-three new districts were included. They are Sinam District in Gimcheon; Dogae and Gyodong districts in Gumi; Jacheon District in Yeongcheon; Danchon District in Uiseong County; Andeok and Cheongsong-eup districts in Cheongsong; Samsan District in Yeongyang-gun; Iseo District in Cheongdo County; Dongseo District in Gyeongsan; Baedong District in Gyeongju; Goemit District in Bonghwa; Geumjin 1 District in Yeongdeok County; and Geoilhang District in Uljin County, North Gyeongsang Province.
Of the 102 ongoing project districts, 17 are scheduled to complete their improvements by the end of 2027.
Meanwhile, the province will work with cities and counties to swiftly secure local funding and complete preliminary administrative procedures.
For new projects, preparations will be completed within this year so that design service contracts can be commissioned in early January 2027. The province also plans to seek additional national funding until the government budget proposal is finalized through deliberations by the National Assembly.
