[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 13th (local time) that he would lift U.S. tariffs on Irish whiskey.
President Trump made this announcement during a speech on the final day of the Irish Open golf tournament held at the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Ireland. He explained that he had received requests for tariff reductions from numerous figures, including Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and professional golfers.
In his speech, President Trump received cheers and applause from the crowd when he said, "Everyone has been bothering me and asking if I can remove the tariffs on Irish whiskey," adding, "On behalf of the United States, I will remove these tariffs."
Currently, a 10% tariff applies to most items exported from the European Union (EU) to the United States, including Irish whiskey. In a follow-up Q&A with reporters, President Trump drew a line, stating, "Tariffs on other EU products will remain in place, and only tariffs on Irish whiskey will be lowered." He did not mention a specific timeline for the implementation of the executive action.
According to the Irish Whisky Association (IWA), the United States is a key market for Irish distilleries, with annual exports amounting to approximately 450 million euros (about 660 billion won).
This measure is interpreted as an attempt to balance the recent tariff exemption applied to British whisky. President Trump eliminated the 10% tariff on British whisky last April, immediately following the visit of King Charles III and Queen Michiko to the United States.
President Trump added, "The UK is already receiving tariff exemptions," and "it is unfair to impose tariffs only on Irish whiskey."
