Keeping the Olympic Dream Alive After 28 Years: Men’s Volleyball Finishes Third at Asian Championship to Qualify Directly for World Cup

[Financial News] South Korea’s men’s national volleyball team overcame the devastating setback of losing its main attacker to injury and completed a dramatic comeback. The team defeated Australia in a full-set thriller to finish third at the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship for the first time in nine years.
South Korea, ranked 24th in the world and coached by Isanaye Ramirez, defeated 38th-ranked Australia 3–2 (16–25, 25–18, 22–25, 25–18, 15–9) in a thrilling five-set battle in the third-place match at the 2026 Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship, held on July 13 at Kitakyushu City Gymnasium in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
With the result, South Korea secured a berth in the 2027 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Men’s Volleyball World Cup, awarded to the top three teams at the tournament. It was South Korea’s first top-three finish at the Asian Championship since placing third in 2017, nine years ago. The team also kept alive its bid to reach the Olympic tournament for the first time since the 2000 Summer Olympics, with a chance to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The match began uneasily. South Korea was stifled by Australia’s imposing blocking wall in the first set, surrendering five blocks and falling 25–16. After regrouping, South Korea leveled the match at 25–18 in the second set, with Heo Su-bong and Dong-Hyeok Lim combining for 10 points. However, consecutive points conceded late in a closely contested third set put the team back in danger.
The turning point came in the fourth set. With South Korea trailing 14–13, Dong-Hyeok Lim, who had been leading the attack, left the court after complaining of severe back pain. In the desperate situation, ace Heo Su-bong exploded. At 14–14, he delivered a crucial open attack, then scored three straight points at 18–15 to swing the momentum decisively toward South Korea.
Riding that momentum, South Korea completely dominated the fifth set. Consecutive points from Heo Su-bong, Lim Sung-jin of the Armed Forces Athletic Corps, and Lim Jae-young of Korean Air turned a 2–1 lead into a 5–1 advantage. Middle blocker Lee Sang-hyun of the Armed Forces Athletic Corps then scored consecutive points with lightning-fast quick attacks that caught Australia off guard, giving South Korea a 7–4 lead. Park Chang-sung of Busan OK Savings Bank OKman also found his range, sealing the match at 15–9.

Heo Su-bong led both teams with 28 points and was the primary force behind the victory. Lim Sung-jin added 15 points, while Lee Sang-hyun and Park Chang-sung made decisive contributions in the middle with eight and nine points, respectively. South Korea also collected several individual honors. Heo Su-bong finished first in scoring with 113 points overall and tied for second in service points with 10. Libero Park Kyung-min of Hyundai Capital Services led the tournament in digs with 49 and was named Best Libero.
After completing a perfect rebound by reclaiming third place in Asia for the first time in nine years, the national team will take a short break to regroup after returning home before departing for Nagoya on July 24, the venue for the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya.
