"Just Popping Champagne Amid Peace Rhetoric"... North Korea Responds to Chung Dong-young's Overture with Missiles

[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to present a peace agenda for the Korean Peninsula in connection with their speeches at the UN General Assembly on the upcoming 22nd (local time). However, as North Korea continues its provocations, including ballistic missile launches, concerns about the collapse of North Korea-U.S. talks and the four-party talks remain unresolved.
According to the military on the 13th, North Korea has continued its armed provocations by launching ballistic missiles into the East Sea a total of four times over the past month or so, including on the 6th, 12th, and 20th of last month and on the 12th of this month. North Korea's missile launches have continued 13 times this year alone.
Nevertheless, on the 12th, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young urged North Korea to participate in dialogue, stating that discussions on ending the armistice regime on the Korean Peninsula would begin in earnest with the UN General Assembly this month serving as a turning point. However, the very next day, on the 13th, North Korea continued cutting off dialogue alongside the launch of a ballistic missile.
President Lee Jae Myung and President Trump will deliver speeches at the UN on the 22nd. A U.S.-China summit is also scheduled for two days later.
Minister Chung optimistically predicted, "There is a possibility that a peace agenda for the Korean Peninsula will emerge in September." Minister Chung also claimed that the obstacles to the four-party talks promoted by the Kim Young-sam administration have disappeared. Minister Chung assessed, "The obstacles that blocked the four-party talks promoted by the Kim Young-sam administration—namely, the withdrawal of United States Forces Korea (USFK) and a direct peace agreement between North Korea and the U.S. excluding South Korea—have disappeared."
Minister Chung also said, "President Trump is a leader who has consistently shown interest in and determination regarding the Cold War issue on the Korean Peninsula over the past decade," adding, "We must take advantage of this opportunity."
Contrary to Minister Chung's expectations, dissatisfaction with the current administration's North Korea policy continued within the opposition. The People Power Party pointed out, "Just one day after the Minister of Unification popped champagne while singing the tune of non-existent peace, North Korea responded with a ballistic missile provocation as if to show off."
Furthermore, they lashed out, calling it "a deplorable reality that stands in direct contrast to the administration's complacent security view, which believes peace can be preserved solely through ceaseless conciliatory gestures and gestures of dialogue while being captivated by unrealistic ideals." The People Power Party went further, urging the immediate reprimand and dismissal of Minister Chung, who they claimed had blinded the public with his rhetoric about a "perfect time for peace."
