South Korea’s U-18 national baseball team, led by manager Jeong Yun-jin of Deoksu High School, routed the Philippines 6-0 in the second Super Round game at Taipei Dome in Taiwan on the 12th.
The team’s impressive winning streak began in the group stage, where it finished first in Group B. After three straight wins in the preliminary round, South Korea defeated Japan and the Philippines, the top two teams in Group A, in succession during the Super Round. With five wins in five games, it is now on the verge of reclaiming the Asian title for the first time in eight years.
On the mound, starter Kwak Do-hyeon of Busan Technical High School delivered a dominant performance. The right-hander allowed just one hit over 42⁄3 innings and struck out 11 batters, completely shutting down the Philippines’ lineup with a powerful pitching display. After the starter’s flawless outing, Yoon Ye-seong of Inchang High School and Han Gyu-min of Daejeon High School took the mound in succession and cleanly closed out the remaining 21⁄3 innings without allowing a run.
The offense also showed strong focus and seized control early. In the top of the second inning, Kang In-gyu of Cheongju High School, batting eighth and starting at third base, opened the scoring with a timely single to right. In the third, South Korea scored a fortunate run on a wild pitch and a balk before Lee Ho-min of Gyeongnam High School delivered a two-run double to center field, extending the lead to 3-0.
The game was effectively decided in the fourth inning. South Korea capitalized on fielding errors by the Philippines’ outfield and created another opportunity. A sacrifice fly by Park Bo-seung of Gyeongnam High School helped stretch the lead to 5-0 and completely extinguished the Philippines’ hopes of a comeback.
Now, all eyes are on the highly anticipated final. Japan earned its place in the championship game by defeating host Taiwan 2-1 in the second Super Round game earlier that day.
The decisive Korea-Japan matchup for the Asian championship will be held at Taipei Dome in Taiwan at 7:30 p.m. on the 13th. Expectations are high over whether Jeong Yun-jinho’s team, which has shown unstoppable momentum through a perfect balance of pitching and hitting, can defeat Japan and lift the championship trophy for the first time in eight years.
