Daegu Metropolitan City Wins President’s Award for ‘Reflector That Lights Up When a Vehicle Approaches’

[Financial News] Daegu Metropolitan City’s ‘smart reflector,’ developed using the Internet of Things (IoT), has received the President’s Award in this year’s Local Government Information and Communications Best Practices Presentation Contest. The device alerts drivers and pedestrians to danger by turning on LEDs when a vehicle approaches in areas with limited visibility, such as intersections without traffic lights and narrow alleys.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) held the 31st Local Government Information and Communications Best Practices Presentation Contest in Seoul on the 10th and 11th. On the 13th, it announced that eight local governments, including Daegu Metropolitan City, had been selected as award recipients. This year, 33 cases were submitted by metropolitan and basic local governments nationwide, and eight advanced to the finals after a document review and public evaluation.
Daegu Metropolitan City’s smart reflector automatically turns on its LED when a vehicle approaches or sends a visual warning to encourage drivers to slow down. After undergoing technological development and field testing, the product has been commercialized and is also being prepared for export.
Gyeonggi Province received the Prime Minister’s Award. It established a mobile civil-service platform using the 5G government network, allowing multiple local governments to use it jointly at disaster sites and other mobile workplaces. The project was recognized for reducing construction costs and improving on-site response capabilities by jointly using metropolitan-level infrastructure instead of having each local government build separate communications infrastructure.
The MOIS Minister’s Awards went to Seoul Metropolitan Government, Yongin-si, Gyeongsan-si, Gimcheon-si, South Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island. Seoul Metropolitan Government established a rescue system that uses AI to detect diving and water-related accidents occurring at bridges over the Hangang River and elsewhere, then dispatches autonomous drones and rescue equipment. Yongin-si replaced its paper-based pet registration process with an online system based on QR codes, while Gyeongsan-si introduced a system that uses its own communications network and CCTV to crack down in real time on vehicles delinquent on automobile taxes or fines.
Gimcheon-si uses its own communications network for public Wi-Fi, wildfire monitoring, and enforcement against illegal motorcycles. South Gyeongsang Province separated the national network from the provincial administrative network so that administrative and firefighting services would not be interrupted during fires or earthquakes. Jeju Island established a pest-monitoring system in which AI automatically identifies captured pests and notifies farms and pest-control authorities.
The Local Government Information and Communications Best Practices Presentation Contest has been held annually since 1996. This year’s awards consisted of one President’s Award, one Prime Minister’s Award, and six MOIS Minister’s Awards.
