[Financial News] Samsung Electronics is expanding its hands-on education program, which teaches elementary and middle school students how to learn about and use artificial intelligence (AI) with Samsung Galaxy devices. In the second semester of this year, the company will add lessons on basic AI concepts and ethics while strengthening creative experiential activities. It plans to provide additional training to approximately 70,000 students.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 13th that it will begin recruiting classes for the second-semester Galaxy AI Class program on the 14th. The program is open to upper-grade elementary school students and middle school students nationwide.
Teachers in charge can apply on a class-by-class basis through Samsung.com. Samsung Electronics will consult with the teachers on details such as class schedules and preferred subjects before finalizing the participating classes.
Galaxy AI Class, which began operating in earnest in the first semester of last year, is a visiting education program held every semester. Professional instructors and assistant instructors visit participating classes and conduct lessons using Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
Samsung Electronics will revise the curriculum starting in the second semester of this year so that future generations can develop the basic skills needed to properly understand and use AI. A new first-period subject, ‘AI Basic Literacy,’ will teach students the fundamentals of AI, including its basic concepts, ethics, and applications. The second-period ‘Galaxy AI Practice’ class will also be newly structured. The existing career and drawing subjects will remain, while video, photo, and self-management subjects will be replaced with subjects centered on creative experiential activities, such as the environment, history, and travel.
Participating classes can choose one of five subjects—career, drawing, environment, history, and travel—and learn how to connect AI with their areas of interest.
From last year through the first semester of this year, approximately 175,000 students completed Galaxy AI Class, with about 1,000 schools participating. According to Samsung Electronics, a satisfaction survey conducted in the first semester of this year recorded satisfaction rates of 94.5% among students and 99.8% among teachers. Samsung Electronics plans to provide training to approximately 70,000 additional students in the second semester, giving more than 250,000 students cumulative opportunities to experience AI over the two-year period.
Lim Seong-taek, executive vice president overseeing Samsung Electronics’ Korea operations, said, "We will continue to develop the program around subjects that build AI-use skills and classes centered on creative experiential activities."
