HD Hyundai Promotes ‘Three-Tank LNG Carrier’ and Receives Certifications for AI Solutions

[Financial News] HD Hyundai showcased next-generation gas-carrier technologies at Gastech, the world’s largest gas exhibition, on the 13th. In addition to promoting its world-first three-tank LNG cargo-containment technology, the company received certifications for technologies designed to address environmental regulations.
HD Hyundai announced that it will participate in Gastech 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from the 14th to the 17th. Five affiliates—HDKSOE, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, and HD Hyundai Electric—are taking part. The booth will feature models of eco-friendly vessels, including next-generation LNG carriers, floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), and LCO2 carriers.
For LNG carriers, HD Hyundai will highlight the value of its three-tank technology at a seminar hosted by Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), a French LNG cargo-containment technology company. The technology enables the construction of 177,000-cubic-meter-class carriers by increasing capacity by 3,000 cubic meters from the conventional four-cargo-tank specification of 174,000 cubic meters, while reducing boil-off losses. The vessels were ordered by Norwegian shipping company BW LNG and are scheduled for delivery from the second half of 2028 through 2029 in cooperation with GTT and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
HD Hyundai will also receive recognition for the design suitability of a futuristic LNG carrier featuring forward accommodation and a wind-assisted propulsion system. The system places the crew accommodation at the bow, creating space on the upper deck for the wind-assisted propulsion equipment. After receiving Approval in Principle (AiP) at last year’s Gastech, the design is now being recognized through Lloyd’s Register (LR) drawing evaluation, which incorporates the classification society’s requirements. The company is also proceeding with the commercialization of an AI solution for optimizing LNG-carrier engine operations. Along with basic certification, it is completing the Product Design Assessment (PDA).
HD Hyundai will also receive LR certification for a design technology that addresses minimum-pressure regulations for Type C tanks used to store liquefied gas on medium-sized vessels. Certification will also cover the development of a 35,000-cubic-meter-class LCO2 carrier and an 185,000-cubic-meter-class hybrid electric-propulsion system.
In addition, HD Hyundai will sign a memorandum of understanding with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Siemens to assess the safety of ammonia-fueled vessels. The parties will jointly develop digital-twin technology and pursue certification for new technologies. During the exhibition, HD Hyundai will sign a total of 30 technology certifications with global classification societies and memorandums of understanding with major companies.
An HD Hyundai official said, "We possess unrivaled vessel technologies that can respond flexibly to environmental regulations while maximizing operational efficiency." The official added, "Based on continuous investment and research and development, we will lead the carbon-neutral vessel market."
