‘Targeting Europe’s Narrow Streets’: Kia’s First PBV Surpasses 50,000 Units as Next-Generation Lineup Rolls Out

[Financial News] Kia Corporation’s first electrified purpose-built vehicle (PBV), the ‘Kia PV5,’ has surpassed 50,000 cumulative global sales just 13 months after its launch, establishing itself as a game changer in the commercial vehicle market. Its locally tailored design, based on a dedicated platform, is proving its value overseas and driving sales. Building on this momentum, Kia Corporation will make its larger next-generation PBV, the ‘Kia Concept PV7,’ public for the first time on the global stage as it moves to solidify its leadership in commercial vehicle electrification.
According to Kia Corporation on the 13th, global cumulative sales of the midsize electrified PBV ‘Kia PV5,’ which officially launched in June last year, totaled 53,530 units as of the end of July.
After 15,853 units were sold in the second half of last year, sales reached 37,677 units in just the first seven months of this year, charting a steep growth curve. This ranked third among Kia Corporation’s entire EV lineup from January through July, behind the Kia EV3, with 62,484 units, and the Kia EV5, with 45,796 units.
The most notable feature is its overwhelming popularity overseas compared with its home market. Overseas markets accounted for 60.2% of cumulative sales, or 32,222 units, far exceeding domestic sales, which represented 39.8%, or 21,308 units. In other words, six out of every 10 Kia PV5 vehicles sold globally are now driving on roads outside Korea.
The key driver of its early success is its highly practical design, built around the dedicated PBV platform E-GMP.S (Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service). The Kia PV5 offers ample cargo space with its long 2,995-millimeter wheelbase while keeping its turning radius to 5.5 meters. These specifications are optimized for European urban environments, where narrow streets and limited parking areas are common. It also features a low second-row door step and a high roof height to maximize convenience for workers getting in and out and loading cargo. Advanced features, including the second-generation Pedal Misapplication Safety Assist (PMSA), have also been added.
The vehicle’s locally tailored product appeal has been demonstrated through a series of major awards. At last year’s commercial vehicle exhibition Solutrans, it became the first Asian electric light commercial vehicle and the first Korean brand to win the International Van of the Year title for 2026. It also received the highest rating in the commercial van category of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
On the 14th, at IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026, the world’s largest commercial vehicle exhibition, in Hanover, Germany, Kia Corporation will unveil its second dedicated model, the large PBV Kia Concept PV7, for the first time worldwide.
With Europe’s midsize electric van market expanding rapidly—the market grew 9.2% year on year in the first half of this year, far outpacing the 2.3% growth of the overall van market—Kia Corporation plans to significantly increase its share of the commercial electrification market when the Kia Concept PV7 officially launches next year.
A Kia official said, "By launching various electric vehicles, including the Kia Concept PV7, we will emerge as a leading player not only in the PBV sector but also in the global electric vehicle market."
