Financial News correspondent Lee Byung-chul in New York】 The United States’ August Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.4% from a year earlier, matching market expectations. However, the monthly increase in core inflation came in higher than expected.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said on September 11 local time that August CPI rose 0.4% from the previous month and 3.4% from a year earlier. Both figures matched market forecasts.
Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% month on month. That was 0.1 percentage point higher than the market expectation of 0.2%. The year-on-year increase in core CPI was 2.4%, in line with expectations.
The stronger-than-expected monthly core inflation reading is expected to intensify debate within the Federal Reserve over whether to raise interest rates at next week’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.
