"My Top Priority Is Maintaining Superiority Over China"... Trump's Response to Warning of 'AI Extinction'

[Financial News] In response to warnings from current and former Anthropic researchers that "artificial intelligence (AI) technology could escape human control and wipe out humanity," U.S. President Donald Trump declared that "maintaining technological superiority over China is my top priority."
On the 10th local time, President Donald Trump was asked whether AI could lead to human extinction. He replied that he was "not worried at all" and gave the above answer, foreign media outlets reported.
President Donald Trump added, "What concerns me is that if we fail to win the AI race, we will be placed in a very disadvantageous position. We are ahead of China by quite a significant margin—about one year—and I consider that a big difference."
He made the remarks in response to reporters' questions while returning from the Republican National Convention held in Dallas, Texas, that day.
Earlier, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon announced on X, after leaving the company, "Technology companies are gambling with our lives as they lead the development of self-improving AI models that could escape human control." He added, "AI developers genuinely believe that this technology could kill us all within 10 years."
Evan Huebinger, a current Anthropic researcher, echoed the warning on X, saying, "Personally, I think there is more than a 10% chance that this will happen within 10 years," sparking major controversy.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman then reportedly told employees in a private setting that he was considering ways to slow the development of cutting-edge AI models and expected other AI companies to do the same.
