Kim Seung-won: "A Transformation of the Criminal Justice System in 70 Years... We Will Prepare Thoroughly for the Launch of the Public Prosecution Office"

[Financial News] Kim Seung-won, nominee for Minister of Justice, identified changes to the criminal justice system through the launch of the Public Prosecution Office as a major task for the Ministry of Justice. Kim’s confirmation hearing preparation team announced his "vision and policy direction" in a press notice on the afternoon of the 11th.
Kim said, "In line with the transformation of the criminal justice system in 70 years, I will prepare thoroughly for the launch of the Public Prosecution Office. I will work with relevant agencies to prevent unlawful and inadequate investigations and delays in case processing, and even after the system takes effect, I will listen to the public and the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and promptly address any problems."
The three pillars of the legal administration Kim proposed are democracy, safety and people’s livelihoods. He stated, "If I am given the opportunity to serve as Minister of Justice under a government of national sovereignty, I will pursue legal administration that allows people to feel secure and rely on the law." He continued, "Building on the experience of overcoming the insurrection together with the people, I will firmly uphold the constitutional order and respond firmly to illegal acts by those in power and by capital, so that a fair and just rule of law can be established."
As measures to prevent crime and support victims, he proposed a prevention system using electronic monitoring and artificial intelligence (AI), and emphasized that support for victims in economic, legal and psychological areas would be strengthened.
Regarding the protection of socially vulnerable groups, he said, "I will protect the universal human rights of immigrants and foreigners and help people facing economic hardship recover quickly." He added, "I will revise livelihood-related laws in line with changes in the times and expand free legal assistance and AI-based legal services." He further stated, "I will ensure that no one has to give up their rights because they lack money or do not know the law. I will make sure that the people who most urgently need legal protection receive the help they need."
The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea will hold Kim’s confirmation hearing on the 15th. Allegations that Kim solicited favors related to the development of a new COVID-19 drug and allegations of involvement in stock-price manipulation are expected to be major issues at the hearing.
