Putin warns European gas prices could surge, saying they may exceed $1,500 per 1,000 cubic meters

[Financial News] Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on the 11th (local time) that European gas prices, currently around $1,000, could rise to $1,500.
According to the Russian state-run TASS Russian News Agency, Putin told reporters in New Delhi that he was visiting India to attend the BRICS summit, "European gas prices could rise to as much as $1,500 per 1,000 cubic meters."
Putin pointed out, "Russia initially supplied gas at $150 or $180 per 1,000 cubic meters, but Europe said those prices were too high and demanded a transition to a 'market-based pricing system.'" He added, "The only thing they got as a result was higher prices."
He continued, "Prices are now $1,000 or 1,000 euros, but they could become much more expensive in the future."
European natural gas prices surged to their highest level in more than three years this month, surpassing 80 euros per megawatt-hour. Gas prices had already risen sharply after Russian production facilities came under attack amid the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Blaming Europe for the war in Ukraine, Putin warned that day, "If Europe deploys troops to Ukraine, it would mean war with Russia."
He also made remarks suggesting that he wanted to ease tensions with Europe. "We do not threaten European countries, nor do we intend to threaten them," he said. "No one seems willing to consider that Russia has absolutely no reason to clash with Europe."
Meanwhile, concerns have recently grown in Europe, including Germany, that Russia is carrying out 'hybrid attacks' targeting Europe. Russia has denied the allegations.
