Former Gangwon Ilbo Regional Bureau Chief Kim Dae-jung Named New Leader of Hoengseong Culture and Tourism Foundation

【Financial News Hoengseong = Reporter Kim Ki-seop】Kim Dae-jung, former head of Gangwon Ilbo’s Yeongseo regional bureau, has been appointed the new president of the Hoengseong Culture and Tourism Foundation and will take office on the 14th.
According to the Hoengseong Culture and Tourism Foundation on the 11th, Kim’s two-year term will run through September 13, 2028. His appointment is expected to give momentum to the realization of “the era of 5 million tourists to Hoengseong,” a key goal of Hoengseong County’s ninth popularly elected local-government term.
Born in 1964, Kim graduated from Wonju High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in French Language and Literature from Korea University (KU). He served as deputy editor-in-chief of Gangwon Ilbo’s editorial department from 1992 to 2014, and headed the newspaper’s Yeongseo regional bureau from 2014 to 2017.
Kim also has experience in the cultural and arts sector. From 2020 to 2023, he served as director of the Wonju Lacquerware Craft Museum, working to advance traditional crafts and local culture and the arts. His books include *Hwangjangmok Geumgang Pine Renamed Under Japanese Colonial Rule*, published in 2022, and *The Black Gold: A Story of Lacquer*, published in 2024.
Attention is now focused on how the foundation will connect the region’s historical and cultural resources with tourism content and secure sustainable competitiveness in tourism. His experience in journalism and the cultural and arts sector is also expected to play a role in discovering tourism resources and strengthening content.
Kim Dae-jung, the newly appointed president, said, “Hoengseong County is a treasure trove of culture and tourism.” He added, “Drawing on my experience in journalism and the cultural and arts sector, I will connect the region’s historical and cultural resources with tourism content and establish a foundation that encourages tourists to stay and return, thereby bringing forward the era of 5 million tourists to Hoengseong.”
