[Financial News] The KOSPI appeared to be struggling under combined selling pressure from foreign and institutional investors, but it recovered some of its losses in the latter part of the session to close at the 6,900 level. Large semiconductor stocks fell by over 3% as investor sentiment weakened due to the escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran.
According to the Korea Exchange on the 11th, the KOSPI closed at 6,909.91, down 124.01 points (1.76%) from the previous day. The index started the day down 3.29% at 6,802.50 before narrowing its losses.
In the securities market, individuals net bought 2.4259 trillion won, while foreigners and institutions net sold 2.4587 trillion won and 1.6443 trillion won, respectively.
By sector, construction (1.90%), insurance (1.56%), and general services (1.43%) were strong, while electrical and electronics (-2.66%), manufacturing (-2.21%), and medical and precision instruments (-2.18%) were weak.
Among the top market capitalization stocks, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (5.62%), Shinhan Financial Group (2.09%), and KB Financial Group (2.08%) rose, while Samsung Electronics Preferred (-4.78%), SK (-4.74%), and SK Square (-4.78%) fell.
The two leading major semiconductor stocks fell by 2–3%. Samsung Electronics closed at 259,000 won, down 9,500 won (3.53%) from the previous day, and SK Hynix closed at 1,813,000 won, down 40,000 won (2.16%).
At the same time, the KOSDAQ closed at 820.64, down 16.28 points (1.95%) from the previous day. Individual investors net bought 571 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors net sold 358.5 billion won and 226.7 billion won, respectively.
"Although the KOSPI and KOSDAQ started with a gap down, the KOSPI recovered some of its losses in the latter part of the session to close," explained Lim Jeong-eun, a researcher at KB Securities. "Selling pressure, centered on the semiconductor sector due to macroeconomic concerns, led the decline in the indices."
