President Lee Jae Myung Mentions TVING Personal Information Breach, Says "Those Responsible Must Be Held Strictly Accountable"

[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung said on the 11th, regarding a breach at the online video streaming service (OTT) TVING that exposed the personal information of about 40 million accounts, "Relevant authorities must quickly and accurately determine the circumstances of the incident and hold those responsible strictly accountable in accordance with the law and principles."
At a senior aides’ meeting he chaired at Cheong Wa Dae that day, President Lee said, "Recently, an online video streaming service company experienced an incident in which the personal information of more than 40 million accounts was leaked, heightening public anxiety and concern. In particular, the company reportedly identified the security vulnerability in advance but failed to take the necessary measures."
President Lee stressed, "We must also make every effort to prevent secondary crimes involving the leaked personal information," adding, "In this era of digital transformation, thorough protection of personal information is a fundamental foundation for maintaining trust in the community and supporting the stable operation of society."
He continued, "With the development of artificial intelligence (AI), hacking methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, while targets are expanding across the board to telecommunications companies, financial institutions, distribution companies and online platforms. It is now time to further strengthen the security capabilities and awareness of our entire society from a national security perspective." He called for action, saying, "To this end, we must urgently pursue institutional improvements that further strengthen responsibility for personal information, regardless of whether the entities involved are public or private organizations or domestic or foreign companies."
President Lee noted that an amendment to the Personal Information Protection Act, which strengthens penalties for personal information breaches, would take effect that day, and called for stronger related sanctions.
President Lee instructed, "We must improve the effectiveness of sanctions by making the burden resulting from neglecting personal information protection incomparably greater than the benefits gained from doing so." He added, "Furthermore, to correct the mistaken perception that security is merely an unnecessary cost, I ask that comprehensive response measures be established promptly through interagency cooperation."
He also urged companies, saying, "I ask you to demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility by expanding your security personnel and overhauling your systems." He emphasized, "The government and businesses must work together so that the public can use digital services with confidence."
