BRICS Summit to Be Held in New Delhi, India, on 12–13; Chinese and Russian Leaders to Gather

[Financial News] The BRICS summit, bringing together emerging economies led by China and Russia, will be held in India on the 12th and 13th. Attention is focused on whether BRICS, which seeks to counter the Western-led order, can resolve divisions among its members caused by the Middle East war and what kind of joint statement it will issue.
According to British media on the 11th local time, the 18th BRICS summit, to be held in New Delhi, India, on the 12th and 13th, will be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres will also travel to New Delhi.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi, whose country holds the BRICS chairmanship, is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin, who arrived in New Delhi earlier that day before the summit’s opening, to discuss bilateral trade and economic cooperation. He is also expected to meet separately with Xi Jinping, who will visit India for the first time in seven years since 2019. However, it remains unclear whether Xi Jinping, who is scheduled to visit the United States later this month, will meet separately with President Vladimir Putin during the BRICS summit.
One of the main points of interest at this summit is whether the member states can unify their positions on the Middle East war, which has continued for more than six months. The UAE, a BRICS member, has come under missile attack from another member, Iran, since the war began. Foreign policy experts expect BRICS’s key task to be formulating a solution to the Middle East crisis that both the UAE and Iran can accept and adopting it in a joint statement.
