Incheon City Begins Full-Scale Development of Sammok Port in Yeongjong-gu

[Financial News Incheon = Reporter Han Gap-su] Incheon City has newly designated Sammok Port in Yeongjong-gu as a local fishing port and has officially launched a project to develop it into a multi-functional fishing port encompassing local fisheries and tourism. According to Incheon City on the 13th, the city held a 'Sammok Port Fishing Port Development Plan Establishment Service Commencement Report Meeting' attended by representatives of fishermen and related organizations, including the Yeongjong-gu Office, Incheon Fisheries Cooperative, Unseo Fishing Village Association, and Sammok Shipowners English Association Corporation.
Although Sammok Port is currently managed as a fishing village settlement port, fishermen have been continuously demanding facility improvements due to a lack of facilities for fishing vessels to safely take refuge during inclement weather and insufficient permanent berthing space.
To address these issues, the city has set out to formulate a concrete development plan based on the results of the 'feasibility study for the designation of Sammok Port as a local fishing port,' which was completed last March. The plan is to ultimately designate Sammok Port as a local fishing port following consultations with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
In this project, comprehensive plans for the layout of fishing port facilities and the creation of waterfront spaces will be reviewed for the Sammok Port area, which spans approximately 100,000 square meters.
In particular, the city plans to establish a comprehensive development plan to foster Sammok Port into a regional hub fishing port, including expanding safe shelter facilities and permanent berthing infrastructure to prepare for adverse weather conditions, and identifying projects that can be linked to fishing village tourism.
The city expects that this project will enhance the safety of fishing vessels and diversify the functions of fishing ports, thereby helping to revitalize the local fishing economy.
Kim Ik-jung, Director of the City's Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Bureau, said, "We expect that the designation of Sammok Port as a local fishing port will contribute significantly not only to ensuring the safety of fishing vessels but also to revitalizing the fishing village economy and increasing the income of fishermen."
