61% Say Ministerial Candidate Yong Hye-in Is Unsuitable; 55% Oppose Strait of Hormuz Deployment [Gallup Korea Research Institute]

[Financial News] A poll released on the 11th found that about six in 10 people consider Yong Hye-in, a candidate for minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, unsuitable for the post. More than half also opposed deploying troops to the Strait of Hormuz.
Gallup Korea Research Institute surveyed 1,000 people aged 18 and older nationwide from the 8th to the 10th. Only 13% said Yong was suitable for the ministerial post, while 61% said she was unsuitable. Another 26% were undecided.
Kim Seung-won, a candidate for minister of the Ministry of Justice, received 22% support for suitability, while 43% said he was unsuitable and 36% were undecided. Among Democratic Party of Korea supporters, 42% considered Kim suitable, compared with 22% who considered him unsuitable. For Yong, however, 26% said she was suitable and 51% said she was unsuitable.
Among progressives, 45% considered Kim suitable and 25% unsuitable. Yong received the opposite pattern, with 30% saying she was suitable and 49% saying she was unsuitable. Even among those who viewed the president favorably, 42% considered Kim suitable and 15% unsuitable, while 26% considered Yong suitable and 43% unsuitable.
Opposition to deploying troops to the Strait of Hormuz prevailed. While 32% said South Korea should deploy military personnel and assets to the strait, 55% said it should not. Another 13% were undecided.
By party affiliation, 69% of Democratic Party of Korea supporters opposed the deployment, while 21% supported it. Among People Power Party supporters, support was higher at 50%, compared with 36% opposition. Independents were 32% in favor and 49% opposed.
The survey was conducted through computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) using wireless telephone random numbers. The margin of error was ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate was 9.4%. For more details, refer to the website of the Central Election Poll Deliberation Commission.
