[Financial News] A passenger in her 80s suffered serious injuries after falling onto the road from a bus that suddenly started moving while its doors were open as she was getting off.
According to Yonhap News Agency on the 10th, at around 9:15 a.m. on the 7th, Ms. A, a woman in her 80s, fell out of a city bus while getting off at a bus stop in Cheongjeon-dong, Jecheon-si, North Chungcheong Province.
Ms. A, who had difficulty walking, was descending the steps while supporting herself with a handrail inside the bus. However, before her feet reached the ground, the bus started moving with its doors open.
After losing her balance, Ms. A fell out of the bus and struck her head and other parts of her body against the asphalt.
As a result of the accident, Ms. A suffered fractures, including spinal injuries, and was diagnosed with six weeks of treatment. She is receiving care at a hospital.
The driver’s response after the accident has also sparked controversy.
Ms. A’s family claimed, "The bus driver did not call the 119 emergency number immediately after the accident," adding, "The driver left Ms. A at the scene without taking any significant action for about 18 minutes, then transported her to a hospital emergency room in a vehicle belonging to the bus company."
Ms. A’s family reported the incident to police, asking them to determine whether the driver was negligent and whether appropriate measures were taken after the accident.
The bus company explained that the driver started the vehicle without realizing that Ms. A was still getting off.
A company official said, "We understand that the driver did not notice Ms. A getting off and started the bus," adding, "After the accident, we instructed our drivers to confirm that all passengers had gotten off before departing."
Regarding the failure to call the 119 emergency number, the official stated, "The driver was also shocked by the sudden accident and was too flustered to call the 119 emergency number," adding, "We will provide all necessary support to help Ms. A make a speedy recovery."
Police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident and whether negligence was involved by questioning the victim, the driver and others.
