[Financial News] Pearl Abyss' open-world action-adventure game 'Crimson Desert' will introduce its first downloadable content (DLC) about seven months after the main game's release. The company is quickly expanding the game, broadening its primarily land-based adventure to the sea and adding life-simulation and management elements.
Pearl Abyss will release Crimson Desert's first DLC, 'Crimson Desert Enhanced: Unknown Journey,' worldwide on October 16. In addition to new enemies and story content, the expansion will add various features, including sailing, housing and facility management.
Players can operate ships themselves to explore unknown islands and search for underwater ruins and treasure. They can also manage facilities and decorate living spaces. By combining life-simulation and management elements with the existing action- and exploration-focused gameplay, the expansion broadens the range of activities available.
Global gaming outlets have taken note of the DLC's earlier-than-expected release. IGN, the world's largest gaming outlet, said, "Given that the game offers countless hours of immersive gameplay without a dull moment, it is very welcome that it is providing players with a wealth of content so quickly." Polygon also highlighted the pace of the expansion, saying, "Crimson Desert has continued to roll out updates since its release, but surprisingly, even more content is on the way."
The newly introduced life-simulation content has also drawn attention. With additions such as a housing system, facility management and relationship-building with non-player characters (NPCs), the game goes beyond the framework of an action adventure. Some overseas outlets have compared these elements to the life-simulation game The Sims.
North American gaming outlet GameSpot said, "Crimson Desert could soon become a life-simulation game capable of competing with The Sims." British gaming publication PC Gamer also noted that the ability to freely decorate facilities and living spaces and expand life-simulation content connected to nearby villages evokes The Sims. The assessment is that Crimson Desert, which began as an action-adventure game, is expanding its gameplay into life simulation, management and relationship-building.
The release of the first DLC about seven months after the main game is another point of interest. Compared with major expansions for large single-player games, which are typically unveiled a year or more after the main game's release, this represents a relatively rapid expansion schedule.
Lies of P: Overture was unveiled about one year and eight months after the main game's release, while Stellar Blade's major expansion arrived about one year and one month later. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree took about two years and nine months and two years and three months, respectively. As Crimson Desert delivers expansion content relatively quickly, positive reactions from overseas media and players have continued.
The DLC is priced at $24.99 (approximately 27,800 won). Some players reportedly responded positively to its value, saying they had expected it to cost more than $40 given the scale of the revealed content.
