[Financial News] Samsung Electronics posted a pointed message on its official social media account immediately after Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, drawing attention.
Samsung, Immediately After Apple Unveiled the “Duo”: “The Leftovers We’d Already Eaten”
On the 9th (local time), Apple CEO John Ternus unveiled the iPhone Duo at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. It is the first foldable iPhone in 19 years since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, with the domestic launch price starting at 3.29 million won.
Immediately after the presentation, Samsung Electronics wrote, “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers.”
The taunting posts continued before and after the presentation. Early in the event, Samsung posted the phrase “Nothing has changed at all,” along with the hashtag #ItsTimeToSwitch, meaning that it was time to switch.
After details of the camera and design changes to the iPhone 18 Pro were revealed, Samsung wrote, “This looks very familiar. Is this the next installment of The Sims?” The post alluded to criticism that The Sims has not changed much from one installment to the next. It was interpreted as suggesting that the iPhone 18 Pro’s design is not significantly different from its predecessor.
When the foldable phone announcement was pushed back in the presentation, Samsung also posted, “You’re making us wait? Fine. We’ll be folding it three ways in the meantime.” The remark was understood as referring to Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy Fold, its first foldable phone, in 2019, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold last December, which folds twice.
“They Copied Us”: Solidarity Hashtag With Duolingo, Too
The product name “Duo” also became material for a joke. Tagging the account of language-learning app Duolingo, Samsung wrote, “I’m really sorry. They copied ours, too,” and added the hashtag #Solidarity. Duolingo joined in, replying, “We infringed upon each other,” in another joke.
Reactions to Samsung Electronics’ posts were mixed. Some users said, “It seems the war of nerves between Samsung and Apple will never end” and “Apple is catching up with Samsung after seven years.” Others criticized Samsung, saying, “Samsung, why are you so anxious?” and “Apple doesn’t even care.”
