The once-solid trade partnership between the two countries has suffered an unprecedented blow since President Donald Trump returned to office last year.
Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade negotiations last month, saying he could not accept the U.S. proposal. In response, President Donald Trump imposed new punitive tariffs, and Canada also took retaliatory measures, causing relations between the two countries to cool rapidly.
However, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that he remains in contact with President Donald Trump and said, "Canada is always ready to reach a fair agreement."
While meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, western Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters, "We believe there is an agreement that would be mutually beneficial to both Canada and the United States," adding, "I speak with President Donald Trump regularly, and we have also communicated in the past few days."
Since negotiations broke down last month, President Donald Trump has resumed mocking Canada and its leadership, including by posting an AI-generated image on social media showing himself wearing ice hockey gear, standing taller than Prime Minister Mark Carney, and calling him "Governor."
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had no intention of escalating the conflict, but maintained that he would never agree to terms that did not serve Canada's economic interests.
