[Financial News] The mother of singer Jang Yoon-jeong, identified as Ms. A, was sentenced at trial to 10 months in prison for allegedly taking approximately 30 million won from an acquaintance under the pretext of an investment and keeping the money.
According to Star News on the 10th, the Criminal Division 2 of the Seoul Eastern District Court handed down the sentence during Ms. A’s first-trial hearing that afternoon.
The court found Ms. A guilty of all charges brought against her. It stated, "The nature of the offense is poor and it is not a minor matter," adding, "The damage has not been recovered, and it does not appear likely to be recovered in the future."
However, the court said it took into account Ms. A’s admission of the crime and remorse when determining the sentence. It explained, "We comprehensively considered the fact that she admitted to and regrets all of the offenses, her limited ability to engage in economic activity, her age, and the motive and circumstances of the crimes."
Ms. A was indicted for allegedly receiving 31 million won from an acquaintance for investment purposes over approximately one year beginning in September 2024, while invoking Jang Yoon-jeong’s name. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of one year and six months in prison, citing her repeated offense despite a prior conviction for a similar fraud offense, the substantial amount of the alleged damage, and the fact that the damage had not been recovered.
Ms. A’s side admitted the charges. Her lawyers requested leniency, saying she committed the offense while trying to cover her living expenses. Ms. A reportedly acknowledged her wrongdoing and shed tears during her final statement.
Jang Yoon-jeong is reported to have cut off contact with her mother after experiencing conflicts with her over financial issues and other matters in the past. More recently, reports related to the case continued after a woman in her 60s, identified as Ms. B, tipped JTBC’s “Scandal Supervisor” that she had been defrauded by Ms. A.
Police tracked Ms. A’s whereabouts after receiving the victim’s complaint. However, they were unable to determine her location for some time because no records of mobile-phone or credit-card use could be found. Ms. A was indicted last month while in custody.
Meanwhile, Jang Yoon-jeong said on “Scandal Supervisor” that she had not been in contact with her mother for a long time. She emphasized, "I normally do not give interviews about my mother, but I am answering because I am worried there could be another victim. I have not had direct contact with my mother for more than a decade."
