YK Law Firm Launches Class-Action Lawsuit Against Gangnam Unni Over Personal-Information Breach [Law Firm News]

[Financial News] A large-scale personal-information breach has occurred at Gangnam Unni, a beauty-medical platform, and YK Law Firm will represent victims in a class-action lawsuit.
YK Law Firm announced on the 10th that it had begun pursuing a damages lawsuit against Healing Paper, the operator of Gangnam Unni, over the personal-information breach and would recruit affected members to serve as plaintiffs.
YK Law Firm believes that the beauty-medical consultation and treatment records leaked in the incident may constitute “sensitive information” under the Personal Information Protection Act. Such information requires separate consent and enhanced security measures during processing.
The amount of damages is also expected to be contested. YK Law Firm maintains that the extent of emotional distress should be assessed differently because not only names and contact information but also detailed consultation and treatment records that individuals may be reluctant to disclose publicly were leaked.
YK Law Firm attorney Hyun Min-seok said, “The degree of emotional distress suffered by victims may differ between cases in which only names and contact information were leaked and cases in which detailed treatment records were leaked as well.”
The lawsuit is also expected to examine whether Healing Paper implemented appropriate access controls and security measures while processing personal information, including through an API that links to the consultation-record lookup function.
Healing Paper previously announced on its website on the 7th that unauthorized access to its API had occurred on the 4th, resulting in the leakage of some customers’ personal information.
A total of 219,665 people were affected, including approximately 160,000 users in South Korea. The affected users also included approximately 48,000 users in Japan, as well as users in Taiwan, Thailand, China and English-speaking regions.
