[Financial News] Shinhan Card and Hana Card announced on the 10th that they will participate as key financial partners in the SK Telecom consortium for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s AI for All Project and work to establish a payment standard for artificial intelligence (AI).
The AI for All Project is a nationwide initiative designed to help everyone conveniently use domestically developed AI models free of charge in their daily lives. Shinhan Card and Hana Card will work with SK Telecom to establish standard specifications for Agent Pay, in which an AI agent handles everything from recommending products to completing purchases.
Agent Pay allows an AI agent to search for and suggest the best options based on a user’s request, then complete the payment. The companies aim to officially launch the service in December this year.
Until now, even when customers received product and service recommendations through conversations with an AI agent, they had to move to the relevant shopping mall or an external payment page to complete the purchase. The two card companies plan to implement an integrated payment system that allows users to complete payments within the SK Telecom AI agent chat window without leaving the application.
Specifically, the companies will minimize complicated search and authentication procedures across everyday spending areas, including shopping, travel, leisure and public utility bills. They also aim to create an environment where older adults and vulnerable groups who have difficulty operating digital devices can easily access financial services through conversation alone.
The companies will also focus on preventing security risks and side effects that may arise in an environment where AI executes payments on behalf of users. They plan to detect attempted fraudulent payments caused by AI malfunctions or chatbot hacking in real time through a fraud detection system (FDS), while also providing compensation and dispute-resolution procedures for mistaken purchases by agents or system errors.
A Shinhan Card official said, “Even in the era of agentic commerce, where AI participates as a payment party, the role of card companies in safely protecting customers’ assets will become even more important. We will establish the standard for AI payments in Korea and build a next-generation financial ecosystem that customers can use with confidence.”
A Hana Card official emphasized, “AI is now evolving beyond a technology that simply provides information into an era of AI agents that understand customers’ requests and perform actual services. We will provide a new experience in which customers can use AI to find, select and pay for the services they want.”
