Sejong National Museum Complex Takes Shape with 500,000 Children's Museum Visitors and Urban Architecture Museum Construction Completed

[Financial News] The National Museum Complex of Korea in Sejong is taking shape as a multifaceted cultural complex, with the Children's Museum reaching 500,000 cumulative visitors and construction completed on the National Museum of Urbanism and Architecture. The remaining facilities are scheduled to be completed sequentially from 2029.
According to the National Agency for Administrative City Construction on the 10th, the Children's Museum, which opened in December 2023, had recorded approximately 500,000 cumulative visitors as of the end of August. This came two years and eight months after its opening.
The National Museum of Urbanism and Architecture, completed last month, was built with a total floor area of 21,091 square meters and a site area of 11,970 square meters. It has two basement levels and three above-ground floors. After the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport completes the interior exhibition work, the museum is scheduled to officially open in July 2027.
The remaining facilities are also moving through the construction process. The Design Museum and Digital Cultural Heritage Center are scheduled to break ground in December after contractors are selected and to be completed in the first half of 2029. The National Archives Museum aims to be completed in the first half of 2030 after detailed design work.
The National Folk Museum of Korea, which will be built in Zone 2, is undergoing detailed design led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, with the goal of opening before 2031. The National Agency for Administrative City Construction plans to cooperate throughout the design and construction process so that the facility harmonizes with those in Zone 1.
The National Museum Complex of Korea in Sejong will introduce an integrated operating system that maintains the specialization of each museum while jointly utilizing facilities, personnel and collection-preservation functions. The museums plan to manage their collections together through a centralized storage facility and expand joint research. An amendment to the National Museum Complex in the Administrative City Act has been submitted to a standing committee of the National Assembly.
Sunmin Hong, director of the Facilities Projects Bureau at the National Agency for Administrative City Construction, said, "The construction of the National Museum Complex of Korea in Sejong is gaining further momentum following the successful operation of the Children's Museum and the completion of the National Museum of Urbanism and Architecture." He added, "We will work closely with the relevant ministries to ensure that the remaining museums are completed without disruption."
