“I withdrew 20 million won from my military savings in cash”...A warning posted on the bank floor made him suddenly come to his senses

[Financial News] A man in his 20s nearly lost all the savings he had accumulated during his military service in a voice-phishing scam, but reportedly avoided the loss thanks to a warning posted on the floor of a bank.

On the 9th, the Korea National Police Agency’s YouTube channel uploaded a video titled “One side was densely filled with writing—people in their 20s were no exception.”
According to the video, a man in his 20s wearing a black backpack visited a police substation in Buk-gu, Gwangju. He took a notebook from his bag and showed it to the officers.
The notebook was densely filled with the false investigative procedures and frightening statements dictated by a voice-phishing ring. It was later confirmed that the man had been deceived by the scammers’ psychological manipulation and had written down each instruction he received.
The scammers heightened the man’s anxiety by claiming that his personal information had been involved in a crime. They also reportedly instructed him to open a new mobile phone account and withdraw cash.

After being deceived by the scammers and visiting a bank, the man was about to withdraw cash from an automated teller machine (ATM) when he noticed a voice-phishing warning posted on the floor. Sensing that something was wrong, he immediately went to a police station for help. The case was then confirmed to be voice phishing.
The cash he had withdrawn was still inside an envelope in his bag.
Police removed the remote-control applications installed on the man’s phone and checked his account information, confirming that he had suffered no additional losses.

The man explained, “I had only recently been discharged, so I had brought out my military-service savings,” adding, “I was carrying nearly 20 million won.”
Addressing soldiers nearing discharge, he said, “We are easy prey because we are young people at the beginning of our working lives who may be carrying a lot of money. If something similar happens, I would advise you to develop the habit of always being suspicious and visit a nearby police substation to talk it over.”
