Korea Institute of Registered Architects’ Quality-Verification Guidelines Incorporated into National Design Standards

[Financial News] The Guidelines for Quality Verification of Design Documents Based on the Korean Building Regulations and the Guidelines for Preparing Electronic Design Documents, developed by the Korea Institute of Registered Architects, will be incorporated into national design standards.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) will issue an administrative notice on the 10th regarding a proposed revision to the standards for preparing building design documents and begin collecting public comments.
The proposed revision is intended to support the review of regulations required during the design stage and reduce errors and omissions in drawings. As part of the process, it establishes an institutional basis for guidelines developed by the Korea Institute of Registered Architects. Specifically, the association would be authorized to prepare and distribute the Guidelines for Quality Verification of Design Documents Based on the Korean Building Regulations and the Guidelines for Preparing Electronic Design Documents.
The Guidelines for Quality Verification of Design Documents Based on the Korean Building Regulations explain, item by item, a checklist of Korean Building Regulations covering the relevant laws and key review points that must be checked during the building-permit process. They are designed to enable systematic reviews of key requirements under relevant laws from the design stage onward.
The Guidelines for Preparing Electronic Design Documents set common standards for creating drawings with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) programs. They focus on reducing confusion caused by differences in how individual designers represent drawings by standardizing the organization of layers used to distinguish drawing elements, drawing numbers, and display methods.
The association plans to distribute the quality-verification guidelines through Seumter, the building-administration system. It intends to use them as a standard for reviewing design documents in expedited permitting support programs currently being conducted in Busan, Daegu, and Incheon Metropolitan City. An association official said, "The two guidelines will help reduce design errors and omissions, as well as unnecessary checks and revisions during the permitting review and construction processes."
KIM JeaRok, chairman of the association, said, "This administrative notice is an important step toward establishing an institutional basis that will allow the association’s guidelines for improving the quality of design documents to be used in the field. Reducing errors and omissions in design documents will enhance public safety and building quality while objectively demonstrating architects’ expertise and responsibility."
