Hanwha Systems Unveils AI Satellite Imagery Analysis Technology for Precision Strikes Linked to K9 and Chunmoo

[Financial News] Hanwha Systems unveiled its next-generation satellite imagery analysis technology, the ‘space AI solution,’ using artificial intelligence (AI) on the 10th. In particular, it can be linked with Hanwha weapon systems, including the K9 self-propelled howitzer, for precision strikes.
On the 9th local time, Hanwha Systems showcased the space AI solution to officials from the global space and defense industries at the International Defense Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce, Poland. The company demonstrated how the system analyzes, in real time, imagery of Eastern Europe captured by satellites currently in operation.
The space AI solution uses AI to precisely interpret and analyze imagery data transmitted by multiple satellites to ground stations, then summarizes and provides key information. It automatically detects objects, analyzes situational patterns, and identifies anomalies. To support this process, the company integrated satellite imagery collection, AI analysis, and commander decision-making support into a single system.
The supported satellites include electro-optical (EO) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. SAR satellites can capture images regardless of weather or day-and-night conditions, but their black-and-white radar imagery is difficult to interpret. The space AI solution combines SAR data with high-resolution EO satellite imagery and also improves the resolution of SAR imagery itself. It enhances decision-making by identifying aircraft, ships, and vehicles in SAR imagery within seconds. Once Hanwha’s 0.15-meter-class, very-low Earth orbit (VLEO), ultra-high-resolution (UHR) SAR satellite is launched, its applications are expected to expand further.
On the battlefield, the space AI solution can be used to precisely track enemy movements. In particular, it can enable precision strikes when linked with weapon systems produced by Hanwha Aerospace, such as the K9 self-propelled howitzer and K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher. This is possible because the company has developed a dedicated interface linking the strike system with the fire direction center (FDC). The solution can also be used in disaster and emergency situations. It can analyze changes in buildings and terrain in key areas of interest to estimate the scale of damage before and after an incident.
A Hanwha Systems official stated, "This is a world-class technology that integrates and analyzes EO and SAR satellite imagery, transforming satellite data from simple collection into immediate reconnaissance and tactical intelligence. It is a game changer." The official added, "In line with Hanwha Group’s investment in the space sector, we will complete an independent space-ground integrated infrastructure by linking very-low Earth orbit SAR satellites with space AI data centers and other systems."
