[Financial News] The People Power Party Supreme Council meeting saw an open clash over whether independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon should be brought in to serve on the confirmation hearing committee for Kim Seung-won, the nominee for minister of justice. Supreme Council member Woo Jae-jun proposed, "I suggest that we either cancel the disciplinary action against Han or at least suspend it for the duration of the hearing so that he can serve on the committee," but Supreme Council member Cho Kwang-han pushed back, saying, "That would be inappropriate."
Supreme Council member Woo Jae-jun, who is classified as part of the Han Dong-hoon-aligned faction, opened the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 10th by saying, "Kim must be stopped by any means necessary."
He argued that Han is leading efforts to investigate allegations involving solicitation related to a new drug and stock-price manipulation involving Kim, and therefore should be brought onto the confirmation hearing committee. Woo emphasized, "Han is the person leading efforts to bring this case into the public spotlight," adding, "He is handling the case better than anyone else in every respect, including the level of public attention, understanding of the case, and his relationship with the public-interest whistleblower. Realistically, he is the person best positioned to lead it. That is why he must join the hearing."
Woo said, "The Democratic Party will never allow Han to join the hearing and is even saying that he cannot serve as a witness," adding, "Under the National Assembly Act, it is impossible for an independent lawmaker to join the hearing. Even if we give up our party's allocation, he cannot become a committee member unless the Speaker of the National Assembly cooperates."
He continued, "Therefore, the only way for him to join is to restore his People Power Party membership and participate as a People Power Party lawmaker," adding, "Under the party rules, the Supreme Council can cancel or suspend disciplinary action through a resolution. I propose that the party leadership cancel the disciplinary action against Han or at least suspend it for the duration of the hearing so that he can serve on the committee."
Cho, a member of the party leadership faction, objected, saying, "He was expelled from our party because he was suspected of criminal conduct. I don't think this is appropriate."
He added, "An orchestra and a choir are beautiful because they perform together," and continued, "That person really likes showing off and playing by himself, so I think he should continue enjoying himself alone outside."
