Jung Jum-sik Targets Yong Hye-in: "Let's Begin the Complete Abolition of the Mixed-Member Proportional Representation System"

[Financial News] People Power Party floor leader Jung Jum-sik proposed on the 10th that the Democratic Party of Korea begin discussions on electoral reform, including the abolition of the Mixed-Member Proportional Representation System. The proposal targeted the controversy over Yong Hye-in, a candidate for minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, refusing to resign after entering the National Assembly twice through a satellite party of the Democratic Party of Korea.
At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Jung said, "Candidate Yong is insisting on holding both ministerial and parliamentary posts in order to receive state subsidies."
Jung said, "Amid all this, activities by an underground organization resembling a pseudo-religious group have also been exposed," adding, "Some of her political funds flowed into the salary of her husband, a party official of the Basic Income Party, while the party's policy research contracts were assigned to party officials."
He continued, "The Basic Income Party is said to have received 70 million won through various job subsidies. They siphoned it off with remarkable efficiency," adding, "At this point, the party should change its name to the Parasite Income Party."
Jung also mocked the party, saying, "Even six of the Basic Income Party's 10 provincial and metropolitan city branches are located in apartments or on farms. Is this a political party or a collective farm?"
Jung argued that the Basic Income Party was able to enter the National Assembly twice thanks to the Democratic Party of Korea. He said, "How could Candidate Yong have won a proportional-representation seat twice? How could a parasitic party like the Basic Income Party have survived by parasitizing others?" He added, "Ultimately, responsibility lies with the host party, the Democratic Party of Korea. The party that nominated Candidate Yong twice was the Democratic Party of Korea."
He continued, "The fundamental cause of all this is the flawed Mixed-Member Proportional Representation System," and criticized the system, saying, "Left-wing parties lacking substance gather around the host party, the Democratic Party of Korea, like pop-up parties whenever elections approach. They entered the National Assembly by receiving proportional rankings through the Democratic Party of Korea's choice, not the people's choice. Then they act as the Democratic Party of Korea's vanguard."
Jung criticized the system, saying, "This low-quality system must now be abolished. It is a bad law born through a backroom deal involving the establishment of the CIO, breaking with the long-standing practice of changing the electoral system through agreement between the ruling and opposition parties," adding, "If this law remains in place, we will have to see a second and third Yong Hye-in every election."
He emphasized, "It was the Democratic Party of Korea that nominated Candidate Yong as a member of the National Assembly and made the Basic Income Party a parliamentary party," adding, "I propose that the Democratic Party of Korea, which bears unlimited responsibility, begin discussions on electoral reform to completely abolish the Mixed-Member Proportional Representation System."
