[Financial News] Kim Eun-hye, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, revealed that Hong Ji-sun, nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), purchased an apartment in Seoul after moving through five jeonse homes.
According to the request for a confirmation hearing for nominee Hong, obtained by lawmaker Kim on the 10th, Hong sold his existing Seongwon Apartment in Suwon for 250 million won just before moving into a jeonse apartment in Nowon District in 2012. He subsequently moved into Geonyeong Apartment in Nowon District in August 2012 (jeonse deposit: 350 million won) and Green Apartment in Nowon District in August 2014 (jeonse deposit: 310 million won).
In 2018, he moved to Suwon Raemian Noble Class (jeonse deposit: 415 million won), and then moved again to an apartment in Yeongdeungpo District (jeonse deposit: 570 million won) later that year. After moving into Yeongdeungpo Dangsan Lotte Castle (jeonse deposit: 925 million won) in 2021, nominee Hong purchased Sindorim Taeyoung Apartment in Guro District, Seoul, for 1.05 billion won last year, moving between jeonse homes a total of five times over 13 years.
During his previous tenure as director of the Urban Housing Division of Gyeonggi Province, Hong advocated introducing Basic Housing instead of excessive jeonse living or purchasing a home with a loan. In November 2021, during the tenure of Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae Myung, he explained the purpose of Basic Housing, saying, "The aim is to provide housing that allows people to live stably at a reasonable cost for as long as they wish, without the need to pay excessive jeonse deposits or purchase a home with a loan."
In response, lawmaker Kim said, "The housing ladder that the minister climbed is now difficult for the public to use. The reality of the Lee Jae Myung administration's real estate policy is that high-ranking government officials actively use the jeonse-to-jeonse moves to secure their own homes, while making it impossible for the public to use the same path," adding, "I will focus on the confirmation hearing to restore the housing ladder."
