Google to Invest 20 Trillion Won in AI Infrastructure in Finland [Global AI Briefing]

[Financial News] Google will invest 13 billion euros (approximately 20 trillion won) in Finland to secure AI infrastructure, including AI data centers and power. It will be the largest single investment Google has ever made in Europe.

Google explained that the investment also includes a 22-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Fortum, Finland’s state-owned power company. From 2030 to 2049, Google will use up to 50% of the electricity generated at Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant.
Google added that the investment includes support for related energy infrastructure, such as wind power, battery storage, and improvements to power transmission and distribution networks, in addition to securing nuclear power.
Finland was chosen as a major destination for Google’s AI infrastructure investment because of its abundant low-carbon power capacity, climate conditions that can reduce data center cooling costs, and geographic proximity to European customers.
Ruth Porat, Google’s chief investment officer, described the investment as a “Bring Your Own Power (BYOP)” strategy.
Rather than simply building data centers for its AI business, Google is also directly purchasing the power it needs.
This is seen as reflecting a shift in the global competition among big tech companies over AI infrastructure—from securing GPUs and semiconductors to securing power grids and energy systems.
