[Financial News] Memory semiconductors have emerged as the 'king' of the semiconductor industry amidst the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, and this dominance is expected to continue for the time being.
According to market news outlet MarketWatch on the 9th (local time), Mehdi Hosseini, an analyst at Susquehanna International Group, a U.S. investment firm, stated in a client note the previous day that he projected global semiconductor industry revenue this year would reach $1.5 trillion (approximately 2,004 trillion won), double that of last year, and that memory was the "main driving force" of this growth.
Based on July global shipment and average selling price data from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), he pointed out that memory currently accounts for 50–55% of total semiconductor revenue. Historically, the share of memory has remained at the 20–30% level.
Hosseini stated that the surge in memory demand driven by AI has led to severe supply shortages and skyrocketing prices, forecasting that the average price of DRAM will rise by 50% this quarter and an additional 20% in the fourth quarter, while NAND flash will rise by 60% this quarter and an additional 25% next quarter.
He added that, excluding memory, the price increase for the entire semiconductor industry would have been "more moderate."
Memory-related stocks showed strength across the board on the New York stock market on the 9th.
Micron Technology, Inc. closed at $1,027.77, up 2.8%, while SanDisk Corporation rose 1.5% to $1,764.17. Micron Technology, Inc. has surged 250% and SanDisk Corporation 632% year-to-date. SK hynix American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) finished trading at $198.63, up 7.1%.
